Moving Checklist

Print this page and use it to check off the important "things to do" as you prepare for your next move!

Address Change

    c Post Office: Give Forwarding address, 4 - 6 weeks
    c Charge accounts, credit cards
    c Subscriptions: notice requires 6 - 8 weeks
    c Friends and relatives

Medical, Dental, Prescription Histories

    c Ask Doctor and Dentist for referrals, transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, X-rays. Obtain birth records, medical records, etc.
    c Don't forget to check with your Optometrist for your prescription too.
    c Also, check with your vet to get your pets records and a letter of reference to a new vet. ( We found this was very helpful in letting the new vet know we paid our bills and that our pets were important family members.)

Important

    c Obtain school records for your children
    c Veterans notify your draft board or VA office
    c Check to see if your will must be rewritten when moving across state lines

Don't Forget To:

    c Empty freezer, plan use of foods
    c Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator. Place charcoal to dispel odors
    c Have appliances serviced for moving
    c Remember arrangements for TV and cable
    c Clean rugs or clothing before moving: have them moving - wrapped
    c Check with your Moving Counselor: insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment.
    c Plan for special care needs of infants or pets
    c Check with Agricultural Department of new state to see if they have any restrictions on plants
    c Refill drug prescriptions
    c Have car tuned up for trip if you are driving to your new destination

On Moving Day

    c Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover costs of moving services
    c Carry jewelry and document yourself, or use registered mail
    c Plan for transporting of pets, they are poor traveling companions if unhappy
    c Let close friends or relatives know the route and schedule you will travel including over night stops. Use one person as message headquarters
    c Double check closets, drawers, shelves, and attic to be sure they are empty
    c Leave old keys, garage door openers, broiler pans, landscape/house plans and instructional manuals needed by new owner with Realtor or in kitchen drawer.

At Your New Address

    c Obtain certified check or cashier's check necessary for closing Real Estate Transaction (check with title/escrow company for details.)
    c Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage
    c Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater and furnace. Have appliances checked
    c Ask Mailman for any mail he may be holding for your arrival
    c Have a new address recorded on driver's license
    c Visit city offices and register for voting
    c Register car within 5 days after arrival in state or a penalty may have to be paid when getting new license plates
    c Obtain inspection sticker and transfer motor club membership
    c Apply for state Driver's license
    c Register family in your new place of worship
    c Register children in school
    c Arrange for medical services: Doctor, Dentist, Vet, etc.

Bank

    c Transfer funds, arrange check-cashing in new city
    c Arrange credit references

Insurance

    c Notify company of new location for coverage: Life, Health, Fire and Auto

Utility Companies

    c Gas, light, water, telephone, cable
    c Get refunds on any deposits made

Delivery Service

    c Laundry, newspaper, changeover

Pets

    c Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.
